Alicia Waller is a genre-expanding vocalist, composer, and bandleader recognized for the contemporary fusion ensemble Alicia Waller & The Excursion. With the release of her EP, Some Hidden Treasure, (released in 2020 on innova Recordings, the label of the American Composers Forum), she emerged into original work at the intersection of jazz, soul, and vernacular sounds. Known for the luminous warmth of her voice and captivating approach, Waller creates a rich, expressive tapestry that has been praised as a synthesis of splendor, creativity, and depth.
Highlights include the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Kennedy Center Millennium Stage, BRIC Arts Media House, Museum of Modern Art, Museum of the City of New York, the Jamaica Performing Arts Center. Additional notable engagements have included Opera Exposures at Snug Harbor Concert Hall, Nuyorican Poets Café, Prelude to Performance with the Martina Arroyo Foundation, and Strathmore Music Hall.
Waller received her undergraduate degree in vocal performance from the University of Maryland and graduate degree from New York University, Gallatin School of Individualized Study. Soon after completing her graduate work, her work and process were featured in the documentary series What Moves You? by SkyHour. The short explores her desire to examine sounds capturing the depth and beauty of the human experience.
She is a recipient of numerous awards, including acknowledgements from Chamber Music America, the NYC Women’s Fund, NYSCA, American Composers Forum, and New Music USA. She is currently working on her first full-length studio album, Louder Then, due later this year.
